These Guys Know

(10 favorite words, October 2016)

Salut to the squeegee stop-light boys,
grasping like squid at the righty-tight
spigot of bliss to twist open.

A dollar a dab between gristle
and flask in the snack and blabber
of daily life—
                      These guys know
the price
of a pack, what the skillet thinks of the
sorry sauce that burned its kettle black.
